| Driving Instructions: Drive north on State Highway one. Over the Auckland Harbour Bridge and on to Orewa town ship, 36 km. Orewa township is a very popular East Coast Bay town, full of coffee bars restaurants and arts and craft shops. When you’re driving into Orewa, keep an eye out for the fresh farmed produce markets signs, this is usually on a Sunday morning, a good place to pick out fresh fruit and vegetables for your trip north. Just over the next hill are the Waiwera hot pools (7 km). Very popular hot pools for the families. Back on State Highway one, you will cross the Orewa estuary. after crossing the bridge 500 meters up the road on your right is a turnoff Wenderholm Regional Park another very popular weekend barbecue and picnic pack, if you don’t like the crowds, noisy people, then stay away. Mahurangi Regional Park turn off.(3.4 Km) You will cross a concrete bridge, the Mahurangi regional parks line will be on your left, and there is a special lane to turn right, be careful this is a very busy road. The road out to the Regional Park is a sealed road, except for the last (2km), narrow, and windy Ngarewa Drive. (5.7 km) This is the only turn off on Mahurangi Road, there are a lot of side roads off to the left this is the only one to the right. So turn right at the V, junction on to Ngarewa Drive. (2.4 km) down this gravel road in, it is Otrarwao Bay. Before descending down into Sullivan’s Bay there is a car park on your right you can park here to start the walks. It is better to drive down into Otarawao Bay; there is an information board to read up about the area. There plus pamphlets of all the walks. The park is very well-equipped, toilets, fresh water, and plenty of parking and camping sites. Not forgetting a public telephone box. Camping charges start from $5 to $10 per person per night; motor homes with compliance certificate maximum of two nights stay only. You can ring the ranger station on 09 3662000. |
| Camping on track: A permit is required for the camp sites. |
